Twittering with succes for students/starters.

Internet and especially social media is upcoming and fast moving. Everywhere people and the media are talking about twitter and that it is becoming more and more important for businesses to use as marketing tool. It is a new world you need to get to know.

The first time someone told me about twitter (remember I am a student of Commerce) I thought it was like hyves and facebook, fun for people like me to meet friends and share information. Nothing important or special. Boy was I wrong! The first person, who explained the importance of twitter as marketing tool, was the manager of Kyteman. He gave a lecture at my school about social media. He used twitter for his marketing campaign, filled one of the biggest concert halls (Heineken music house) in Holland, and spend 52 euro ( no I did not forgot to add some zero’s). He explained us that you need to be dedicated and have patience, but eventually twitter was the way to go. So I got me a twitter account, I knew how it worked, somewhat…. Sent tweets with quotes and things I did that day. Thinking if I ever got to work at a company who used twitter, I knew what it was.

Then I had a lecture of Mr. de Boer. He told us about the importance of twitter for your own career. After that lecture I had a whole new look on how to use my twitter and other social media sites. It really helped me get a better knowledge of this new world and I am getting better as marketer. I will pass this knowledge to you, so you hopefully will succeed to.
  1. Start following the big players in your field.

  2. Look who they follow, look at their previous tweets, and if relevant to you, start following them.

  3. Expand the people and businesses you follow, and learn of what and how they tweet.

  4. Work at it every day.

  5. Do not tweet useless information. Be relevant!

  6. Tweet about your passion/field.

  7. Start looking for websites about your field, and look at them every day for relevant information.

  8. Retweet and use the information you find on those websites to tweet yourself.

  9. You will see you will learn new things every day and get better and better. Plus you will get more followers.

  10. If you like writing, start a blog. And try to tweet/blog in English. If you tweet in English you will be relevant to more people.

  11. Dare to ask questions. If you want to learn ask questions at the people (followers/following) on twitter. They will respond, like you asked them, sometimes even start following your progress and maybe offer you a job or internship!

  12. Extra tip! Use a twitter name that tells something about your field / what you tweet about. Your own name will not attract enough attention. (When I am looking at the people someone follows and scan trough it, I mostly pick out the targeted logo’s or names).
